もうこんな感じです。

みんな携帯出して動画撮りまくり。

日本だと結構厳しいですけど、海外ってこういうとこ結構緩いんですよね。

日本のアーティストはほぼないですが、海外アーティストのライブは個人が撮った動画が死ぬ程YouTubeにアップされてます。

どうせ撮られちゃうんだからってことなのかどうかはわからないですが、METALLICAなんかはライブのたびにライブ音源を公式にダウンロード販売してます。

前回のさいたまスーパーアリーナのライブ音源も売られてたので行った私はすかさず買いました。

自分が行ったライブの音源とか記念になるし嬉しいですよね。

是非、色んなアーティストに取り入れて欲しいもの。

ドラゴンフォースとアニメソングの融合な新曲「THE ONE」ファンキン良いぜってことですね。

まあアニメソングっぽいですもんね。

This is the second time I’m seeing Babymetal this year, and that’s a sentence I would never have expected to type six months ago. While there are still the perpetually angry and miserablist metal purists who find the mere existence of this band to be a threat to everything they hold dear (and who are all too happy to engage in virulent racism, misogyny and pedo-paranoia to condemn them – because clearly, the only reason you could possibly appreciate a female fronted band is as sex objects, even if, like Babymetal, they are not presented in any sort of sexual way), the Babymetal juggernaut seems unstoppable. The Academy is twice the size of the Forum, where the band played in the summer, and the gig is listed as ‘sold out’ on the marquee. I don’t doubt this is true – I have no idea what the balcony was like, but you certainly couldn’t have squeezed more than a handful more people into the downstairs section. This was as packed-out a show as any I’ve seen. And like last time, it’s a diverse audience: J-pop fans rubbing shoulders with seasoned metallers, emo kids, indie types and assorted curious bystanders. And like before, the fans seem excitable to the point where they might spontaneously combust at any moment. The idea that Babymetal is a gimmick that will soon burn out is clung to by the Metal Elite, but it doesn’t take into account just how utterly fanatical the fans are. Maybe it’s the pop connection – it’s certainly a level of devotion I’m not used to seeing from metalheads. Whatever the reason, though, the band seem to be loved by the bulk of the people here – and all this for a band who still haven’t released a record in the UK yet. People might have attended the last gig out of curiosity, but I can guarantee that pretty much everyone who was at the Forum was a fully-fledged convert by the end – me included, hence my glowing review last time and my presence here tonight. Foaming-at-the-mouth True Metallers will never understand, but that’s fine – I’m often equally baffled by the things they think have musical cred.

Babymetal – Brixton Academy 2014. Photo © Gavin MorrowI’m not expecting this gig to be especially different to the last one – the band was one album to pick songs from, for crying out loud. And musically, the set is almost identical. But the bigger venue has allowed a more theatrical spectacle to emerge. At the Forum, we had an essentially no-frills show, but here there is a stage set of sorts – a metal walkway and staircase, which the girls are elevated to at the start of the show. Oddly, it actually makes the introduction of the band feel a bit less dramatic than the simple curtain drop from the Forum, but does allow more stage movement and ensures that the tiny figures of Moa and Yui can been seen by everyone. There are also some pyrotechnics and a more extravagant light show, giving the event a much more theatrical feel. My companions (who by this stage include Oliver Morris, FAB Press’ Harvey Fenton and Nucleus Films’ Marc Morris) will later compare the gig to a musical extravaganza and a live action anime, and maybe they’ve pinned down part of the appeal. To complain about Babymetal being manufactured is to miss the point spectacularly (and is hardly a shock revelation). This is a theatrical spectacle as much as anything, an all-singing, all-dancing show that just happens to feature some insanely complex, genre-bending and remarkably catchy metal songs.

The set list follows the previous gig for the most part, complete with a couple of opportunities for the Kami Band to show their stuff, solo spots for Su, Yui and Moa, the crazy dance routines, plus the mad as all hell video segments expanding on the whole ‘Fox God’ mythology. Things are varied at the end, with former encore Ijime, Dame, Zettai now providing a barnstorming finale to the main set, and Headbanger being the encore. Then comes a real treat – a lengthy and frankly incomprehensible video scroll about the end of Metal Resistance Part II and the start of Part III introduces brand new song The One, played for the very first time at this gig, and apparently a collaboration with Dragonforce members to boot! Most bands would be nervous about ending a gig on a song that no one has heard before, but by the end the crowd is singing along heartily, much as they have done with many of the other songs (the people in front of me, including a vigorously gyrating young woman, seemed to know most of the songs by heart, which is impressive given that they are all in Japanese).

It’s not all good, admittedly. The sound, though thunderously loud, feels somewhat muffled, with the vocals too low in the mix. I’ve been told this is not a unique experience at this venue, but it did mean that the show was less musically impressive than the Forum appearance. And the audience was incessantly noisy, even in the quiet bits where you really wanted them to shut the fuck up – the carnival atmosphere was a bit too much at times, though anyone looking for rock ‘n’ roll credibility should be impressed by the number of people being pulled from the front, having passed out, and the amount of drunken vomiting taking place.

But sound issues aside, Babymetal live remains an amazing, unique experience, unlike anything you have ever seen before. While metal fans who think the genre should never attract new fans or try new ideas will remain furious, the fact remains that Babymetal – and the whole ‘kawaii metal’ movement that they lead (and which I’ll be writing about shortly) – is the best thing to happen to a stagnating genre in a very, very long time. “This is spectacular!” shouted a woman somewhere to the side of me after the second song, and I have to agree. I hope we’ll be seeing Babymetal again in 2015.

Last Saturday Babymetal played to a sold-out Brixton O2 Academy in what was only their third ever UK performance. But before they danced and partied all holy hell out of the 5000 strong crowd, we caught up with Su-metal, Yuimetal and Moametal to find out about the new album and the Fox God.
